Preppers Secrets: Banana Leaf for Food Storage

I grow Banana plants in a small bed of leaves, dirt and ashes near a little porch off the kitchen. I can walk out and pick leaves while standing on the porch.

Use the leaves for a sustainable free substitute for paper plates. They also can be boiled into a delicious tea.

I also grow them near the smoker to wrap food in before and after smoking.
An old trick, used for thousands of years before refridgeration is to wrap cooked food in fresh
banana leaves. Food will keep fresh much longer this way without refridgeration.

Banana Flowers are cooked and eaten around the world. I like the Thai recipes best. The tiny little bananas are visible as you peel away the layers. The outer leaves can be used as “plates” for serving the meal.
Banana hearts (of the stalks) are also good to eat.
I bought my plants on Amazon for less than $5 each with free shipping. They were very small but grow fast and spread. This is an investment that keeps on giving as we use them for tea, food, paper plate substitutes, tin foil substitutes, and even medicine. Dry some for winter tea. They can be brought indoors for the winter in colder climates.
